Deles Phase Two Workshop project executed at the Dominican College, Dabia – Kebbi State on November 18th, 2015

Topic: The evil effects of examination malpractice – ways to eradicate it.

The workshop was organized for the Senior Secondary School Students of the College as a result of the facilitated DELES Leadership phases One and Two programme organized for the Sisters of the Congregation. It was facilitated by Srs. Martha Offor, OP and Justina Ezike, OP.

The one day workshop started at about 8:40am with an opening prayer led by Habila Paul Na'allah (SS 3 student) after which Sr. Justina explained the workshop theme to the students and begged for their cooperation attention. She then asked for two volunteers to serve as reporters and Hanatu Friday Daniel Konna volunteered.

    Method Used:
Drama and picture codes were used for presentation. Both codes portrayed a young man and a young lady respectively trying to steal from another person. The facilitation questions were used sequentially to analyze the presentations to real life and the students responded intelligently to the questions asked and also shared with smiles on their faces. Their responses are as follows:

Problems that can result from examination malpractices
    1. The offender or victim can be penalized, for instance, in Nigeria, the person could be sentenced to twenty-one years imprisonment
    2. Inability to defend one's result
    3. It can lead to suspension or even expulsion from school
    4. The person can be denied access to other examination that is yet to be written
    5. It affects the growth of the society and the Country, etc.

Root causes of examination malpractices as identified by the students are:

  • Lack of knowledge

  • Laziness on the side of the students to study

  • Lack of seriousness (poor reading culture)

  • Lack of determination, dedication and discipline

  • Ignorance or illiteracy

  • Negative peer group influence

  • Lack of self esteem (low self esteem)

  • Lack of punctuality or late coming to school, etc.

  • In seven groups, the students discussed ways to curb or stop examination malpractices as follows:

  • Educate students on the consequences or effects of examination malpractices through seminars, workshop, etc.

  • Offenders should be punished severely, for instance, suspension or expulsion to serve as deterrent or lesson to others

  • Students should be thoroughly searched before entering the examination hall and the use of any mobile device should not be allowed

  • Moral upbringing by the parents to be intensified

  • Bribery or extortion by the Teachers should not be allowed before, during and after the examinations

  • Schools should make strict laws guiding the invigilation of examinations and also ensure that the school rules and regulations especially concerning examination be maintained or adhered to

  • If possible, students should use computer data base for their examinations

  • Employment of good and qualified teachers

  • Teachers should be warned not to provide students with questions before examination

  • No discussion or communication among students during the examination

  • Security personnel and sufficient invigilators should be provided

  • Students should be committed, determined and serious with their studies

  • The teachers should ensure that the students understand what they are taught

  • The school should provide sufficient learning materials or equipments such as laboratories, libraries, computers, and so on

  • Guidance and counseling should be provided in schools

  • Prayers should be offered

  • Finally, after the presentations from the seven groups, the students committed themselves to start putting the above points, especially the ones that concerned them into practice from this term as they begin their examination.
